About The Artist

It's Up In The Air Avian Illustrations...was created for all birdlovers who enjoy the art of pet birds and wild birds. The artist Dawn Steirer-Scherer creates unique watercolor paintings for all pet bird enthusiasts by way of avian portraits. Many designs appear on tee shirts and other merchandise available on this website as well at select retailers nationwide. This website will be expanding constantly to add more products for the pet bird enthusiast. If you've been to this website before you have already noticed the changes made to better serve the consumer. All suggestions are welcome.

Artist's Philosophy As an artist and pet bird companion I have come to realize the charm and love that a pet bird posesses like no other pet in the world. Inspired by my birds, Rio (Blue & Gold Macaw), Iago, Zazu & Eagle (Budgies), Stripes (Zebra Finch), Buddy (Cockatiel), Petrie (Gold-Capped Conure) and Noah (Blue Fronted Amazon), I take great pride in my watercolors and wish to share my talent by providing you with a selection of avian artwork and products to enjoy.

I received my formal training at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, receiving a BFA in Illustration. After that I worked at one of the largest ad agencies on the east coast for way too long as an in-house illustrator, then left to pursue a more enjoyable life by way of freelance illustration and teaching art classes at a nearby college. Of all the freelance illustrations I have done over the last 20 years, my favorite subject has been of the avian nature. It's Up In The Air Art products and artwork can be seen at various avian expos and private collections around the U.S., Canada, and Japan.

Just think, some time in the not too far future, (or maybe a little ways up there) you're going to see someone on Antiques Roadshow or some other show like that with one of my paintings or prints. They will be told what a fortune the art is worth and you're going to say "Darn, if I had only had gotten Petie's picture painted!" Or you could be one who sees the show and know you have your wonderful watercolor hanging in the living room (not the attic), you briefly consider selling it for millions then realize the picture you have of (insert you bird's name here) is priceless!

Bird Portraits are a favorite of mine as I love to see and hear about your feathered friends and their escapades as well as I enjoying painting them. The portraits are now available in "Nouveau" format as well, for those who favor the style. Please don't hesitate to email with any questions.
